Case Study 1 of 2: What Would Bill Hicks Say?

Media Flight: June to September 2004

Primary traffic source: Links on other peoples blogs
Source of leads: Google Alerts

Secondary traffic source: Forum links
Source of leads: Various search methodologies

Why this worked...
Because the summer of 2004 was full of election furry.
People online were discussing how the material of a 12-year-dead comedian was eerily relevant and contemporary again because he raged against President Bush and the Iraq war. Bill Hicks was raging against President Bush The Elder and the first Iraq war, but without a date on an audio the characters of his narrative were strangely spot on for 2004. WhatWouldBillHicksSay.com became a forum to express how contemporary Bill Hicks' material remains. We created a contest, asking if Bill Hicks were alive today, What Would Bill Hicks Say?

results... the website and the project were turned into a book that sold just ok and most of the winners in the book were pissed at me for a number of reasons, some very valid. i got swamped. i got overwhelmed. i had never edited a book before and i made some mistakes. let me tell you though, having a book published by an established art house gives me serious street-cred in certain circles.

P.S. Here’s a quote I admire: "We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit." --Aristotle

P.P.S. The most appropriate and famous last words I could find: “How were the receipts today at Madison Square Garden?” --PT Barnum He said those words and died.

P.P.P.S. The best last words I’ve ever heard was from my friend Susan Carter’s aunt who said, “I’d like to be someplace better.” And she closed her eyes forever. She plan that?
